- 5) Life, Longevity and Resveratrol: The Science of Genetic Activation - Joseph C. Maroon, MD
This presentation is intended to review the topic of human longevity and specifically target past theories of limits to human lifespan, current research in this area and how advances in the study of the genetic controls of cellular apoptosis, along with the sequencing of the human genetic code now can allow for specific targeted interventions to improve human longevity. These interventions include calorie restriction, exercise and the use of naturally occurring molecules, such as resveratrol to alter human DNA translation to enhance cellular function. These topics will provide health practitioners insight into advance research that may soon provide specific techniques to improved human longevity and health.
To discuss a new paradigm in human longevity we intend to explore these significant changes in diet and pay particular attention to food quantity, and the types of foods we could be consuming that would mirror the diet of our early hunter gatherer ancestors. We will discuss the latest scientific breakthroughs that show how foods consumed almost exclusively by early man, such as fish and seafood, containing omega-3 EFA’s, and fruits, nuts and berries, containing high amounts of health promoting polyphenols, such as resveratrol found in red grape skins, can now be shown to prevent disease and in animals prolong life. These are nutritional factors can actually select, modify and regulate gene activity. This is the new science of epigenetics.
In addition to discussing the concept of calorie restriction and epigenetics related to nutrition, this lecture will review the epigenetic of exercise and my own person experiences with fitness and physical and emotional transformation as a 7- time Ironman triathlete. Following this lecture the attendees will have a significant professional and scientific knowledge base to understand, discuss and counsel their patients about these topics as they are currently unfolding in both the lay and medical science literature related to the science of anti-aging and epigenetics.
